The Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes (SPS3) study began with a pilot study in 1999. This was followed by the main SPS3 study which began with the entry of the first patient in March 2003 at the San Antonio site. SPS3 continued to enrol participants until April 2011 at 81 study clinics or hospitals taking part in this study. The final participants were seen for their last study follow-up in April 2012. SPS3 is an international study with study centers located in the United States, Canada, Spain, Mexico, and South America. The SPS3 study team is now working to analyze all the information that was gathered and results for the blood pressure study are expected to be ready in Fall 2012; other related publications will be posted as they become available. The SPS3 study is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health-NINDS.
